As we remember Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we honour her service and strong connection to the Armed Forces.

As a young woman, the then Princess Elizabeth was just 19 when she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in World War II. In doing so, she became the first female member of the Royal Family to join the Armed Services as a full-time active member.

Her unwavering support for the forces continued over the next eight decades, and passed down her family, with several royals serving including her grandson Prince Harry who served in the British Army for 10 years, including two tours of Afghanistan.

Until her death, the Queen was the last remaining head of state who had served in World War II.
